Home Again Movie Review

A better film would have given a more involving dynamic regarding the rich and the poor, and characters that actually feel real and believable. It’s no fault of the actors ; Home Again is simply dull. I thought this was a charming movie, a real departure from the horror, fantasy and action movies that were out at the same time.

This was the case with the 1978 film I Spit on Your Grave. It follows Camille Keaton playing a victim of rape who seeks revenge on her rapists. The film shows her brutal rape and her exacting this revenge in incredibly graphic and horrifying detail. Many countries banned it, and others gave it at best an X rating. Many critics panned it as an awful movie and it did not achieve great success. The civil rights movement of the 1960’s led to a boom in films that focused on black protagonists and commented on race relations.

Privilege feels disingenuous since the whole film — its people, situations and sensibilities — exists within that same realm of clueless entitlement. It’s perhaps unsurprising that, apart from one fleeting exception, there’s not a person of color in sight; Home Again is vanilla in more ways than one. Reese Witherspoon stars as a newly single mother who gets involved with a younger man in 'Home Again,' the first film by Hallie Meyers-Shyer, daughter of Nancy Meyers.

She doesn't date one of the young guys staying with her because she wants to recapture her youth or make someone jealous or for some other superficial reason. The movie highlights, for me, how often youth and women are underestimated in movies, especially ones like these. Younger guys aren't always stupid boy toys or hot, forbidden affairs, and moms are not all Mrs. Robinson.

"Marriage functions best when both partners remain somewhat unmarried." -Italian actress Claudia Cardinale, 1966

The only real surprises in the movie are super random scenes where our sexy hopeful filmmakers decide to drop a seemingly important conversation to take off their shirts and go swim in a nearby beach. Anyway, I will give credit to the child actors for managing to be adorable and somehow able to deliver awkward dialogue pertaining to depression in a manner not really coming across as offensive. These include Alice’s relationship with her daughters and a budding romance between George, one of the three men, and Alice’s older daughter. However, HOME AGAIN has a strong Romantic, humanist worldview where characters make decisions based on their emotions, apart from God and biblical principles. HOME AGAIN also embraces the idea of divorce at the end and contains some foul language, many examples of moral relativism and very light references to substance abuse. There’s a difference between being nostalgic and being stuck in the past, and Home Again illustrates it well.

It was controversial at the time due to the sexual themes in the film, but has stood the test of time as being one of the better horror films ever made. It doesn’t take long to figure out that the men in this movie are such losers that it would be an unhappy ending for Alice to end up with any of them. So Home Againbecomes more about whether she’ll come to her senses or not. The satirical element in the meetings is too obvious to be deemed clever and it doesn’t occur to Meyers-Shyer that, of all the things we might choose to care about in Home Again, the unmade movie isn’t high on the list. On the surface, this seems to be the kind of story that Meyers-Shyer’s mother, Nancy Meyers, has told with some degree of confidence and no small amount of box office success.

Home Again Reviews

The film is a loosely structured collection of scenes in which most of the characters are dressed in drag. The various scenes are quite graphic, particularly some that have vivid and explicit sexual content. The filmmakers were charged with obscenity and the it was banned, but as a result of this it became a symbol of fighting against such laws and therefore famous as a result. Some films that are viewed as distastefully controversial commentary in their time come to be greatly appreciated in retrospect. The film follows three female go-go dancers who plot to steal the buried hidden fortune of an old insane man who is protected by his young dim-witted son.

However, it’s ahead of it’s time commentary on aforementioned issues has led to it becoming critically acclaimed and newly appreciated in recent years. Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein has been adapted to film time after time. The story is a classic that has resonated with generations of audiences. All the adaptations have taken some creative liberties, but none to the extent of 1973’s Flesh for Frankenstein.

Halloween has long been a cliché setting within which to set a horror film. The apex of this notion is the 1978 classic Halloween starring Jamie Lee Curtis, as this picture shows, in her film debut, and others such as Michael Meyers. The film is lauded as a classic of the horror genre and was even selected by the Library of Congress as being worthy of special preservation.

I saw this film as a pre-screener ahead of it's official release. Sometimes they pre-screen movies because they are great and want them to get buzz, sometimes they are really bad, and hope the audience falls in love before the critics get their hands on it. Not just in story, but in acting, directing, editing score; you name it, it's bad. I love Reese Witherspoon and never thought I would see her phone in a performance but here it is. She doesn't so much as act as rolls her eyes and makes goofy faces; it's embarrassing to watch. There are so many cast members here that usually can do no wrong in my book; Candice Bergen, Lake Bell, Michael Sheen.

'Cannibal Holocaust' is One Of the Few Horror Films That Was Actually Put On Trial

Sarah Kennedy’s performance in the 1971 film The Telephone Book is a prime example of a film controversially pushing the limits of acceptability. The film follows Kennedy, who plays a woman that receives obscene phone calls from various men. The film is an odd sort of comedy, as it features extensive fourth wall breaking and other aspects.

Although the excessive violence resulted in some censorship and bans in various places, the film was an enormous success. It grossed an incredible amount of money and spawned a number of sequels and ingratiated itself into pop culture, and is regarded as one of the greatest horrors of all time. Any film that depicts rape is bound to invite controversy for obvious reasons. This is naturally the case with the film Straw Dogs, released in 1971 and starring the above pictured Dustin Hoffman and Susan George. It follows a young couple that moves to the rural area of Cornwall in southwest England. A series of events escalates to the point that George’s character is brutally raped by two locals.

It's not the Holiday or anything, but it's a lovely, feel good film. The film does feel rushed , which would have been solved easily with a longer length and trying to do less. It does feel like too much was crammed in and it consequently means that the film lacks depth in particularly how the characters are written.

But the fact remains that the film is shallow in its depiction of the world of Hollywood, relationships, and careers. Alice's husband is shown the door by Alice, terminating their marriage. Teddy's heart is broken when Alice ends their affair and sends him and his friends packing. Without any changes in their financial situation, the three filmmakers move into a lavish apartment without any indication of how they will pay the rent. Hardly a minute goes by when Witherspoon or the two daughters are not being encouraged and bolstered by someone on their looks.

Salma Hayek and Director Joel Crawford Talk PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH

As Alice develops a budding romance with Harry, her newfound happiness comes crashing down when her ex shows up with a suitcase in his hand. After learning how Yondu supposedly ruined Christmas for a young Peter, Mantis and Drax decide to give Peter a Christmas he will always remember, as well as the gift of Kevin Bacon. The MCU's first Christmas film was Iron Man 3, even though it came out in May 2013.
